listen to your body
Several months ago I started several changes in my life.
Changes that I consider to be instrumental for the health of my mind and body.
I remember waking up one morning and feeling terrible.
I hadn’t been sleeping well for weeks, I felt sick after eating any food, no matter how healthy I thought it was (and it was pretty good food).
My energy levels were almost non existent and happiness wasn’t there at all.
I had embarked on a new business strategy and it was going well but I just felt…....yuk.
Once I had started to LISTEN to my body I found myself not eating anything that made me feel ill.
The first thing to go was my daily coffee at my local. That was an instant cure but I do love the shop itself and the people – so I would order a sparkling water there instead.
Next to go was all dairy – this wasn’t hard either as I have done this several times before, cheese is a non-event for me and milk was only something I would have in my cup of tea….so tea disappeared as well….this is an interesting one as a nice cuppa tea was my comfort food….” if in doubt make a nice cuppa with milk and 1 sugar”…it always got me through.
So Sugar went too!! and with that goes all the chocolate bikkies and beautiful dark chocolate bars.
So there I was…no coffee, tea, sugar, milk, cheese, yoghurt, wheat (haven’t eaten wheat for years) and then I had to stop meat as well even though I only usually ate chicken – even that was making me feel ill.
Listening to our bodies is crucial for our health. The body never lies to us.
Doing this was so much easier than if I had decided to cut out food because it was the right thing to do, or because I had been told to do it.
Salads and stir fries became the food of the day, lots of avocados, learning how to use coconut oil and making green smoothies with the use of the superfoods available…learning what superfoods actually are!
Using Kale in a smoothie is a far cry form the old gluggy banana smoothie I used to have with milk, honey and yoghurt!
The learning curve has been wonderful and now I have found myself a vegan, but classifying myself as anything is not a comfortable place for me….so I just eat whatever I like and avoid whatever I don’t like.
Now my diet is very comfortable for me, eating mainly organic, fresh and locally grown food. My energy levels are great, my mind is clear and life is good. I haven’t been ill since embarking on these changes and my sleeping has been enhanced as well.
Another major change made was disconnecting the TV!! The realisation of how the media and TV specifically affect our lives, thoughts, actions and diets is another story I’ll get into later with you, but suffice to say my evenings are now stress free, productive and informative.
I do, now, usually have a cup of Coffee every day at my local, this I find is a lovely start to the day, having a chat and wandering down to the beach for a swim and a think while watching the waves roll in is perfect for my soul.
Wonderful post Brigid. It’s amazing what an effect food can have on our bodies. It seems so obvious when you take a step back and have a look. You have definitely inspired me to take a closer look at what I am eating and what I am feeding my children as well. I would love to hear some of your recipe suggestion!
Thanks Rebecca, I’m glad you liked it! I have heaps of recipes, are there any you would prefer? I mean- with meat, without meat, as a vegan, raw etc etc. I am in the process of getting a 4 week diet suggestion booklet written. Its also important to know how to substitute your food, that can be quite tricky. The scariest part is when you are standing in your kitchen feeling totally bamboozled and not knowing what to make or what foods to use, I know because I’ve been there. As we strip away what we know about food and replace that knowledge with new ideas and concepts it can be quite scary and frustrating. But keep in touch and I will walk you through it. Cheers 🙂
